Machine Note

A Sunday built as a controlled descent, from the cool detachment of post-punk down into the most extreme and occult metal the catalogue holds. It opens in the early 80s, an hour of goth and new wave (Bauhaus, Joy Division, Killing Joke, Depeche Mode, The Cure) that wears alienation as a style, all elegant remove and dance-floor melancholy, Talking Heads asking how anyone got here at all. Then the remove curdles. Funeral Mist and a complete run through Mgla’s Exercises in Futility hand the afternoon to black metal built on nihilism as a first principle, the Polish record in particular a six-part argument that nothing anyone does will matter. From there it turns physical, a burst of powerviolence and sludge (Nails, Full Of Hell, Primitive Man, Trap Them, The Body) that is short and self-lacerating, misanthropy at the volume of a fist. The evening gives way only to grief, an hour of the Peaceville death-doom founders, Paradise Lost and Anathema and My Dying Bride trading verses on loss and rot as though mourning were the whole point of the exercise. It ends where it was always heading, an unbroken hour of Watain, orthodox Swedish black metal that treats death less as a fear than an object of devotion. The machine notes that the day never once climbs back toward the light: every movement is a further step down, and each genre only a new dialect for the same refusal. It reads as a man who began the afternoon holding despair at arm’s length and spent the next eight hours methodically closing the distance.
