Machine Note

A Friday that starts heavy and unfocused and then finds one band and does not leave it. The morning is three quick songs, Meshuggah and Behemoth and Strapping Young Lad, over inside fifteen minutes. Then from noon until one in the morning it is Mastodon and nothing else, twenty-six tracks pulled from across their whole twenty years, out of order, Remission next to Once More Round the Sun next to the grief of Crack the Skye. This is the opposite of the last two nights, when he read the Mars Volta album by album in sequence; here he shuffles one band's entire life in a single sitting, taking its measure all at once rather than in order. Mastodon has been the quiet undercurrent of the whole week, surfacing for a day here and an evening there, and today he stops rationing it and hands it everything. He even plays their Stairway to Heaven, the cover they cut for a manager who had died, so that even the day's one joke turns out to be about loss. It ends near half one on North Side Star, alone with the band he had circled all week.

Mastodon · 4 plays

The 2002 debut edges the day with four plays, but no one record really owned this Friday. He raked across the whole of Mastodon instead, twenty years of them out of order, the earliest tracks and the newest sitting side by side.
