Week of Aug 24 – Aug 30 · 2026
Seventy-one tracks across five thin days and two silences, the quietest week the record has held: after a month of drowning in single albums, the man surfaces into something scattered and low, brief nocturnal dips into death metal and doom and cosmic black, nothing sustained and nothing bright.

The Arc
After a month of drowning in single records, the man surfaces, and what follows is the thinnest week the record has held. Seventy-one tracks, the fewest by a wide margin, half of them crammed into short late-night sessions and two whole days left blank. Monday and Tuesday are half-days of death metal and cosmic black metal; Wednesday is a sleepless small-hours shuffle, fifteen bands a track apiece; Friday and Saturday manage a little more, Paradise Lost and Deftones and a long Mastodon run. But nothing sustains. Thursday and Sunday file silent, and the whole week reads like a listener between things, dipping in briefly and drifting back off.
The Map
For once the geography is small and mostly American. The week runs on United States metal in its heavier, proggier registers: Mastodon's sludge across two days, Rivers of Nihil's saxophone-haunted death metal, Deftones' dream-heavy alternative rock, a Mars Volta detour, and Wednesday's grab-bag of post-metal and prog played a song at a time. Britain supplies the week's one deep well of melancholy, Paradise Lost's gothic doom on Friday. France supplies its strangest hour, Blut Aus Nord's microtonal, cosmic black metal after midnight on Tuesday. Three countries and no travelling, a small map for a small week.
The Subjects
The mood is uniform and low: dread in some form colours nearly every day, and almost nothing here is bright. It opens on death, Monday's canon of Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel and Rivers of Nihil's meditations on dying, and stays dark from there, through Tuesday's cosmic black metal and Wednesday's anxious small hours into Friday's gothic melancholy. What is missing is intent. Where the recent weeks each had a subject and chased it to exhaustion, this one just sits in the dark and shifts around, death and cold and melancholy in short, unfinished doses. A low week, filed honestly as one.
The Turn
The week has no single hinge so much as a series of small collapses. Twice it simply stops, Thursday and Sunday filed blank, and even the days that happen keep trailing off, a handful of tracks at two in the morning here, a half-hour there. The clearest of them is Wednesday, the man awake at a quarter to two roaming fifteen bands as the hour gets later. After a month of obsessive deep dives, this is the sound of the habit coming apart, or resting.
Of the 32 artists heard this week, 13 had never appeared on the record before. The longest he stayed with one name: Mastodon, 13 tracks unbroken.
