Machine Note

A short Tuesday evening, barely two hours, but built as a clean descent from the cosmos into the crypt. It opens in deep space: Pink Floyd's Pompeii recordings played to an empty Roman amphitheatre, Tangerine Dream's sequencers, Gong's glissando drift and the pastoral English prog of Genesis, most of it wordless and side-long, a man letting the ceiling come off for an hour. Interstellar Overdrive drags the Floyd back to the 1967 Barrett freak-out just before the mood hardens. At a quarter past seven the exploration turns to the retro-occult underground: Jex Thoth, Ghost, Orchid and, two days on from the doom Sunday, Uncle Acid again, the long instrumental voyages traded for short fuzzed songs about slow death and worse. It closes on Black Oath's ..My Death, an Italian doom band naming the evening's real subject outright. The machine notes the shape of it, expansion then contraction: an hour spent getting as far out as the catalogue goes, then twenty-odd minutes hauling the whole thing back down to earth and underground.

Pink Floyd's 1972 Obfusc/ation, the 2016 remix of the Live at Pompeii session, owns the evening on the strength of One of These Days and the twenty-four-minute Echoes. Both were filmed by Adrian Maben in the empty Roman amphitheatre at Pompeii with no audience at all, the band playing to stone, which is close to the cosmic solitude the whole first hour reaches for.
