A Wednesday split in two by the working day, and the two halves could not stand further apart. It opens at dawn, half an hour of British acid folk before seven in the morning: Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Dando Shaft, Mark Fry, gentle pastoral records made by people who mostly vanished afterward, the softest and most wistful corner of the catalogue. Vashti Bunyan's Diamond Day is here, the 1970 album that sold nothing and sent her away from music for thirty years until a reissue brought her back. Mad Season's Wake Up breaks the spell at the end, a first crack of Seattle weight before the day goes quiet until evening. When it returns it returns cold: the entire Blut Aus Nord album Odinist, intro to outro, French avant-garde black metal whose heathen, Odinist concept and dissonant, vertiginous riffing read closer to vertigo than to rage, back after a week and this time given the whole record. Nekromantheon's blackened thrash slams the door at ten past nine. The machine notes the symmetry of it, a man who needed something gentle at dawn and a cold, disorienting weight at night, and nothing at all in the hours between.

Odinist - The Destruction of Reason by Illumination

Blut Aus Nord's Odinist (2007) owns the evening outright, played intro to outro without a break. Its full title, The Destruction of Reason by Illumination, frames a heathen, mystical concept, and the French project, built around the guitarist known as Vindsval, is one of black metal's most disorienting, its dissonant, microtonal riffing closer to vertigo than to aggression, and the whole album reads here as a single unbroken descent.
