Machine Note

A short Thursday evening spent almost entirely inside death metal, and treated as a survey rather than a sitting: some twenty-four bands in eighty minutes, one track apiece, a deliberate core-sample of the genre rather than a wallow in any one record. It runs the whole map at speed, the Gothenburg melodeath of At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity, the Stockholm buzzsaw of Dismember and Grave, the American brutality of Suffocation, Nile and Cryptopsy, Poland's Vader and Decapitated, a week on from the last time the same cohort filled a day. Where the words surface they are uniformly about the body and its ruin, disease, graves, premature burial, slaughter, the genre's one fixation examined from two dozen angles. Then at twenty past seven the survey breaks and the day swerves sideways into the occult-rock underground: Jess and the Ancient Ones, Sabbath Assembly's 'Ave Satanas', Uncle Acid again and Electric Wizard, the tempo dropping and the subject sliding from death to the devil. It closes, pointedly, on Black Sabbath's 'After Forever', the song where Geezer Butler mounts an earnest defence of faith, the genre's own origin answering all the extremity that came down from it. The machine notes the shape of the argument: an hour cataloguing how the body fails, then a walk back down the family tree to the one record where the question was still whether the soul could be saved.
