Last night was two dozen bands, one track apiece. Tonight is four, and he stays inside each until it is done. From a quarter past six he goes under, into war metal, the most cavernous and extreme dialect black-death owns: three whole records back to back, Death Worship's Reaping Majesty, the entirety of Diocletian's Gesundrian, then all of Teitanblood's Seven Chalices, ninety minutes of martial blast and occult ritual where one song barely separates from the next and the ambient interludes are the only air in the room. Diocletian take their name from a Roman emperor, which is roughly the register the whole thing works in, apocalypse and annihilation delivered as pure force. Then, at twenty to nine, it stops dead. Three Hellacopters songs see the night out, Swedish garage rock so sunlit and dumb-happy it sounds like a different person put it on, the last one landing alone near eleven like a door swung open onto a summer street. No bridge, no transition: he buries himself two hours in the blackest, most airless music he owns, then strolls out into rock and roll, and the record leaves the two standing side by side without a word of apology.
