Seven songs, one band, no one else invited. Saturday belongs entirely to Thulcandra, the German outfit built for a single purpose: to keep Dissection's Storm of the Light's Bane alive, the same frostbitten tremolo and melodic black-death, pulled here from five different albums as if he were auditing the whole catalogue for the one true note. It arrives in two sittings, five songs before nine and then a long dark gap until a quarter to eleven, when two more turn up like an afterthought he could not leave alone. The titles carry the entire aesthetic without a lyric sheet, cosmic fire and funeral pyres, fallen angels, black flags of hate, the occult melodrama that this music wears with total sincerity. There is a quiet joke folded into it: Thulcandra is Steffen Kummerer's other project, the man behind Obscura's clean, weightless technical death metal, here indulging the exact opposite instinct. Ten days since the name last surfaced, and tonight he lets it crowd everything else off the record.
