Yesterday was one disciple. Tonight he goes looking for the ancestors. Thulcandra opens again, a second day running, then steps aside to let in the whole bloodline of melodic Swedish black metal it descends from: Sacramentum, Stormkeep, Outlaw, Immortal's frostbitten thrash, the cult one-album ghost of Vinterland, all of them orbiting the band at the genre's centre, Dissection, whose Storm of the Light's Bane every record in the first hour is quietly trying to rebuild. Then he stops orbiting and goes in, the entire Reinkaos in sequence, Dissection's glossy and divisive final album, its lyrics written as scripture for the chaos-gnostic order its author kept. From there he keeps walking backward in time, past the polish, all the way to 1985 and the whole of Bathory's The Return of the Darkness and Evil. That one is Quorthon alone with a cheap studio and no craft to hide behind, seven songs of witch-burnings and total destruction cut before the genre had rules, the raw template every colder, prettier thing earlier in the night was built on top of. The students, then the master, then the dirt the whole thing grew out of.
