After a weekend excavating black metal down to its Swedish roots, this lands like a bucket of cold water: forty-seven minutes, fourteen songs, almost none of them past three minutes. He swaps one kind of heaviness for its opposite, trading the cavernous occult ritual of the last four nights for heavy hardcore, powerviolence and sludge, music with no interest in eternity or the cosmos, only in the next ninety seconds and how hard it can land. It moves fast and blunt through the family, Converge and Integrity out of the metallic-hardcore nineties, Nails and Weekend Nachos and Dead in the Dirt from the powerviolence revival, the noise-rock filth of Unsane, and newest by two decades, Chat Pile's God's Country, a 2022 record about American poverty that sounds like a panic attack. Where the black metal looked up and out at the cosmos, this stares straight down at the self and the street: guilt, open wounds, hometown heroes, and the flat one-word question Why. It signs off with Nails informing everyone listening that they will never be one of us, the entire ethos of the genre folded into a single title. No ritual, no atmosphere, just a man who needed to be hit in the face for three quarters of an hour.
