It starts with a single Watain track at half past nine in the morning, like a warning shot, and then goes quiet for five hours. When he comes back, he goes all the way to the bottom. The afternoon and evening belong to bestial black metal, the rawest and most extreme room in the whole house: Beherit and Archgoat out of Finland, Sarcofago’s proto-black debut from Brazil, Conqueror and Black Witchery and Bestial Warlust, the war-metal axis that treats production values as cowardice and turns every track into the same chaotic, cavernous roar. The titles are a catalogue of darkness, thrones and ruin and light-devouring night, delivered with the deadly seriousness of men who mean it. It is the most extreme corner the record has visited yet, ugly on purpose, closer to ritual than to music. Then, with twenty-five minutes left in the day, the whole thing detonates into a joke: the entire Septic Tank album, Lee Dorrian of Cathedral and Napalm Death barking a dozen short hardcore-punk songs about social media, whitewash and rotting civilisation, the cosmic dread swapped without warning for a much smaller and funnier war against the modern world.
