After yesterday's trip to the bottom, tonight he just puts things on. No thesis, no deep dive, barely a shape: a dozen tracks pulled almost entirely from names the record already knows, sludge and doom and death metal shuffled together like a man flicking through his own recent history. Acid Bath threads through it, three songs of Louisiana swamp-sludge and Dax Riggs's morbid croon, the closest thing the night has to a spine. Around them the old reliables trade turns, Morbid Angel and Obituary and Entombed for the death-metal itch, Electric Wizard and Saint Vitus and Cathedral for the slow crushing weight, the Melvins somewhere in between. It is the least deliberate evening in a while, comfort food for a man whose comfort food is Cryptopsy's Slit Your Guts. Then a ninety-minute gap and one last track at half nine, Nailbomb's Cockroaches, Max Cavalera in a bad mood, and that is the night.
