The day starts not in metal but in dark jazz, Bohren and Der Club of Gore and the Dale Cooper Quartet, slow noir instrumentals played at the pace of a funeral, essentially doom for people who have put the guitars away. A short crust burst follows at midday, Discharge and Anti Cimex and the Swedish crew, as if to check the heavy end is still there. Then the night is another wide trawl, a track each from two dozen bands across death and black metal and prog, the restless one-track-each habit that has run all week. But the news of the day is the jazz, and how well it fits: where Sunday's fusion sat oddly against the metal, this dark jazz meets it halfway, the same weight and dread carried without one distorted chord. Even Cynic turns up in the evening to underline it, a band that built death metal out of jazz in the first place.
