[ 29 TRACKS ]

12:26 – 01:07

Machine Note

Godflesh has been shadowing the record all month, a single track at a time, turning up on day after day without ever being the point. Today it finally is: seven of them in a row through the afternoon, Justin Broadrick's industrial metal at full grinding length, the machine-heaviness he keeps returning to given room at last. Around it a short scatter of the modern heavy crop, Deafheaven and Nails and Wolves in the Throne Room, and then the day's strangest turn, two songs from the Wicker Man soundtrack, Paul Giovanni's pastoral folk-horror dropped in like a hinge. Because after it the whole character of the day changes. The small hours go entirely to Porcupine Tree, eleven tracks pulled across their catalogue, melancholy cerebral prog that trades Godflesh's mechanical weight for an emotional one. The heaviest music was in the afternoon, but the day's real gravity is at the end of it, quiet and sad and nowhere near as loud.

† Liner note

Godflesh is Justin Broadrick's project, drum-machine industrial metal about dehumanisation; a name that had shadowed this month one track at a time, given a full block here at last.
