An evening that walks American punk from its rawest beginnings out to the far edge where it stops sounding like punk at all. It opens in the SST Records vault around 1980, Black Flag's Nervous Breakdown and Damaged, the Minutemen, Meat Puppets and Wurm, the sound of the American underground when it was still mostly frustration and speed, songs about paranoia, jealousy, being dead inside before you turn twenty. Late on it swings to the Bay Area and the whole of Rancid's ...And Out Come the Wolves plus the Operation Ivy record that birthed it, the same hardcore anger melted into ska and street singalongs, addiction and rent and belonging, rage you can dance to. Between the two, a single lonely Dissection track, black metal wandering in from another life for three minutes and then gone. And it ends where none of it began, past midnight, in a long run of Neurosis, the band that started in this exact hardcore scene and slowed it into vast ceremonial catharsis, punk grown up into something closer to a purge. Three chords, then a movement, then a cleansing.
