Machine Note

A Tuesday built almost entirely from slowness and sorrow. The long day is a tour through doom in every dialect it has, two dozen bands at a track apiece, and the subject barely moves even as the sound does: this is heaviness as depression, grief and defeat rather than aggression. It runs from the source, Black Sabbath's Into the Void, out through Candlemass's operatic despair and Saint Vitus's Born Too Late, the funeral crawl of Thergothon and Ahab, My Dying Bride and Saturnus mourning at length, the whole genre agreeing that the point of playing this slowly is to sit inside a feeling until it becomes unbearable. Doom is misery worn as a badge of honour, and for an afternoon he tries it on. Then, near midnight, the mood snaps from sorrow to violence: thirteen Bloodbath tracks in a row, Swedish death metal made purely for the love of gore and rot, eaten and devoured and stillborn, the slow ache of the day traded for something fast and gleeful and cruel. Sadness, then slaughter.
