Most of a Monday afternoon belongs to Death, the band, and to Chuck Schuldiner's slow transformation of a gore genre into a thinking one. Sixteen tracks trace his whole arc, from the primitive splatter of Scream Bloody Gore to the increasingly philosophical late records, songs about the flattening of emotion, individual thought patterns, comprehension and its lack, death metal turned inward on the mind that makes it; Schuldiner was dead of cancer at thirty-four, which lends the introspection a weight he could not have planned. From there the day walks the genre back to its Swedish cradle, one track apiece through Carnage, Entombed, Grave, Unleashed, Necrophobic and the rest, the founders' shared fixation on the grave and the body laid out in a row. Night takes an odd turn, two pieces of Paysage d'Hiver, Swiss black metal buried in tape hiss and frozen air, a second evening running the man reaches for something glacial after Sunday's Lycia. And then, with no warning, Faith No More's Angel Dust, four songs of Mike Patton's sardonic Americana, midlife crises and RVs, the one genuinely funny thing in a day otherwise given to the dead.
