Thursday runs the whole history of heavy metal backwards and forwards in a single afternoon. It opens in the denim-and-leather years, an hour of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and its kin: Judas Priest and Motörhead, cult names like Satan and Jaguar and White Spirit, Pagan Altar's occult doom, the sound of the genre when it was young and hungry and mostly British. Then, without warning, everything goes quiet. For fifteen minutes he drops into the gentlest music imaginable, library and hauntology and acid folk, Nick Drake and Vashti Bunyan, even the theme from the children's series The Clangers, a pocket of stillness that has no business being here. And then he goes to space. The rest of the night, more than two dozen tracks, belongs to the cosmic and cerebral wing of death metal, the strain that points the genre at the stars instead of the grave: Blood Incantation and their ancient-astronaut suites, Cynic's jazz fusion, Nocturnus's science fiction, Timeghoul and Tomb Mold and Gorguts, a long procession of bands using the heaviest music there is to reach for something vast and cold and far away. From the pub to the void by way of a nursery rhyme, the record's whole range in one Thursday.
