A Friday that starts in mourning and takes the long way down to calm. It opens with three songs from Alice in Chains' Unplugged, Layne Staley's cracked voice at its most exposed, then four Crowbar tracks, New Orleans sludge that treats grief as a physical weight to be dragged uphill. From there it hardens: an hour of classic death metal and grindcore fired off one track each, Terrorizer and Repulsion and Dismember and Suffocation, obliteration and burning death and infected crypts, the body and its ruin catalogued at speed. The centre of the day is Cynic, glimpsed only briefly yesterday and today swallowed whole: the entire Traced in Air remixed, then the entirety of Ascension Codes, more than twenty tracks of Paul Masvidal's cosmic, weightless prog, the record he built after losing both of the band's founding rhythm section. It is the day's turn from death to something past it, consciousness and ascension in place of crypts. Then he comes all the way back to earth, a warm hour of classic rock, the Grateful Dead and Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin and a stretch of desert stoner, before Slowdive's shoegaze closes it soft. From an unplugged elegy to a shoegaze lullaby, the whole day a slow exhale.
